Live a unique lifetime experience exploring Tambopata Reserve, one of the world’s richest biologically diverse ecosystems, located in the Peruvian Amazon basin; hiking the Salkantay trail to the ancient Royal city of Machu Picchu and trekking the Rainbow Mountain.

During your jungle experience you will stay at a comfortable Lodge, you will enjoy the endangered giant river otters while sailing across Lake Sandoval!

Connecting the city of Mollepata, Cusco with Machu Picchu, the Salkantay Trek is an ancient and remote footpath located in the same region as the Inca Trail where massive snowcapped mountains collide with lush valleys and friendly Quechua villages. The Salkantay Trek takes you through the Salkantay Pass reaching 4,600m at its highest point. You will start the trek hiking through glaciers and finish the hike down in the jungle. You will enjoy your private tour of Machu Picchu, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and the most beautiful archaeological site of the Americas.

During your Rainbow Moutain trek, you will pass through beautiful landscapes and several traditional villages and  enjoy the magnificent landscape and the amazing views of the Mountain range.

ITINERARY

Day 01: Arrival in Lima

Upon arrival at Lima airport, you will be welcomed by our representative and driven to your hotel located in Miraflores.

Overnight in Lima at Casa Andina Select Miraflores

*Lima city is located at an altitude of 80 meters (262 ft) above sea level.

Day 02: Lima Private city Tour (B)

After breakfast, you will be driven to the city of the Kings where you will see beautiful monuments Colonial Palaces, Colonial houses adorned with Moorish-style balconies, Plaza San Martin, Plaza de Armas, the baroque cathedral, Palacio de Gobierno (Governors Palace), the Archbishop’s Palace with its big carved wooden balconies, and the convent of San Francisco which houses the largest collection of religious art in the Americas. Underneath the convent lie extensive catacombs that served as the cemetery during the colonial period!

Day 03: Flight Lima - Puerto Maldonado – Refugio Amazonas (B, L, D)

After breakfast, you will be driven to Lima airport to board your flight to Puerto Maldonado

Upon arrival at Puerto Maldonado airport you will be met by our representative and transferred to Posada Amazonas headquarters (10 minute ride). While enjoying your first taste of the forest in the gardens you will be asked to pack only the necessary gear for your next few days, and leave the rest of your luggage in a safe deposit. This helps to keep the boats light.

Skirting Puerto Maldonado, we drive 20 kilometers to the Tambopata River Port, entering the Native Community of Infierno. The port is a communal business.

Tambopata River Port to Refugio Amazonas: you will have a 2 ½ hour boat ride to Refugio Amazonas located in Tambopata National Reserve.

Upon arrival, the lodge manager will welcome you and brief you with important navigation and security tips.

Caiman Search After dinner we will walk by the river’s edge scanning the shores with headlamps and flashlights to catch the red gleams of reflection from caiman eyes.

Day 04: Oxbow Lake - Canopy Tower - Ethnobotanical Tour ( B, L, D)

After breakfast, we will paddle around the lake on a canoe or a catamaran, looking for lakeside wildlife such as hoatzin, caiman and horned screamers, hoping to see otters and macaws.

A thirty minute walk from Refugio Amazonas leads to the 25 meter scaffolding canopy tower. The tower has been built upon high ground, therefore increasing your horizon of the continuous primary forest extending out towards the Tambopata National Reserve.  From here you will see toucans, macaws and raptors.

After lunch, we will visit a farm owned and managed by Don Manuel from the community of Condenado. He grows a variety of popular and unknown Amazon crops. 

Late afternoon we will have an ethno botanical tour and learn about the variety of plants and trees that are used by the local population as medicine like Ajo-Sacha, Yuca de Venado, Uña de Gato, Charcot-Sacha, Para-Para, among several others.

After dinner, there will be a presentation about ecotourism projects in Tambopata National Reserve.

Day 05: Refugio Amazonas - Puerto Maldonado. Flight Puerto Maldonado - Cusco (B)

We retrace our river and road journey back to Puerto Maldonado, our office and the airport. Depending on airline schedules, this may require dawn departures.

Upon arrival in Puerto Maldonado, transfer to the airport to board your flight to Cusco.

Upon arrival at Cusco airport you will be transferred to your hotel located in the center of Cusco.

You have a free afternoon to acclimatize and adjust to the altitude.

In the evening, you will have your pre-trek departure briefing with your Inca trail guide.

Day 06: Cusco private City Tour (B)

This morning, your private driver and guide will pick you up from your hotel to show the beautiful Inca city of Cusco, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; you will visit not only the most beautiful pre-Columbian buildings but also the wonderful Inca Ruins located on the outskirts of Cusco city.

Tour highlights: Koricancha temple, Cusco Cathedral, Sacsayhuaman, Q’enko, Tambomachay, PucaPucara.

After lunch, you will be driven to San Judas Chico girls’ house and share playing-time with the girls and some sweets and biscuits.

Day 7: Start Salkantay Trek: Cusco – Mollepata – Sayapata – Humantay Lake – Soraypampa (B, L, D)

At 05:00 am, you will be collected from your hotel and driven for 3 hours to Mollepata (2900 meters above sea level) where we will stop for last minute supplies, leg-stretching or to use the restrooms. We continue driving to Sayapata, the starting point of our trek, here, we meet our support crew (Wranglers and horses), they will load the equipment on horses and mules. Around 9:00 a.m., we start our hike toward Soraypampa (3850 meters above sea level). During the trip we will have amazing views of the majestic Salkantay, other mountains covered with snow, and the Valley of Apurimac River. About 1:00p.m., we will have a Peruvian lunch. After lunch, we will continue hiking toward Humantay Lake for 3 hours approximately; this is a beautiful lake in the mountains nearby our camp site in Soraypampa.

Day 8: Soraypampa - Challway (B, L, D)

Today, nature will change drastically from dry sceneries to snowy peaks and tropical areas. After a nutritious breakfast, we will start the most difficult part of the trek. We will start the hike around 7:00 in the morning. We will hike to a place called Pampas Salkantay, then go toward the left side of the snowy peaks of Umantay located next to the ApuSalkantay. At midday, we will be on the highest point (4600 meters above sea level). We will appreciate spectacular views of the mountains and the imposing snowy peaks of the Salkantay (6264 meters above sea level) which is known as the second highest point of the Cusco region. Around 1:00 p.m., we will have our lunch, in the area called Huayracmachay. After a trek of approximately 3 hours, we will arrive at our camp site in Challway (2920 meters above sea level).

Day 9: Challway – La Playa – AguasCalientes (B, L)

Around 5:00a.m., we will start our trek and we will enjoy the beautiful sunrise. We will walk for about 5 hours toward Playa Sahuayaco and during this period; we will observe a town called Collpabamba, also called the “Forest Cloudy Brow” where waterfalls, fruit-bearing trees, varied flora, and birds can be observed. Once at Playa Sahuayaco, we will take a local bus to drive us to the hydroelectric train station. At around 1:30p.m., we will have our lunch at the hydroelectric. We will take a train from the hydroelectric to the town of AguasCalientes (2000 meters above sea level). Here, you have the option of going to the thermal hot springs. We will have dinner at 7:00p.m.

Day 10: Sun gate - Machu Picchu (B, L)

After a very early wake up, we board the bus to Machu Picchu and hike to Inti Punku (The Sun Gate) where we meet the Inca trail group and are rewarded with the most beautiful view of Machu Picchu!

Finally, we achieve our goal! We reach Machu Picchu and feel that all the great effort we put up during our hike was worth it.

Average hiking time: three hours

We have a guided tour of this impressive Inca city and learn about the history of this site, who lived here, how it was discovered in modern times and why the Spaniards never found it.   You will have some insight into the various features of this sacred city and have free time to really enjoy yourself alone in this spectacularly located site, an unforgettable experience that will stay with you forever!

12:30 p.m. Buffet lunch at Tinkuy Restaurant located at the Sanctuary Lodge.

P.m. Bus journey to AguasCalientes

Overnight in AguasCalientes at Hatun Inti Classic

Day 11: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu (B, L)

07:00 am: climb Huayana Picchu Mountain.

13:00 Lunch in AguasCalientes

Machu Picchu – Cusco

Afternoon train journey on board the Vista dome train from Machu Picchu to Cusco.

Upon arrival at Cusco train station, you will be driven to your hotel.

Day 12: Start Rainbow Mountain Trek: Cusco – Tinqui – Upis – Auqui (B, L, D)

At 05:00 am, you will be collected from your hotel and driven through the new Interoceanic highway for about 3 hours to the small village of Tinqui located at 3,800 meters (12,467 feet)above sea level. We will pass through beautiful landscapes and several traditional villages such as Urcos, Cattca and Ocangate, after reaching Tinqui we continue to Upis, enjoying the magnificent landscape of the Vilcanota mountain range and the amazing views of Ausangate Mountain! We reach the Thermal Baths of Upis where we have breakfast at the hot springs located at 4,400 meters (14,436 feet) above sea level. After breakfast we start with our hike uphill for about 2 hours, then we cross Arap aPass located at 4,850 meters (15,912 feet). From here, we continue for 3 and 1/2 hours down the valley, passing by the green lagoon of PuqaQ’ochathen we reach the turquoise waters of the lagoon Jatun Puqa Q’ocha where we will have lunch. In the afternoon, we will climb until reaching the second pass, Chilcalocated at 4,900 meters (16,078 feet) above sea level, next we walk downhill to the campsite to enjoy our tea time, and later dinner.

Day 13: Rainbow Mountain – Cusco (B, L)

After an early breakfast we head to the Rainbow Mountain, after a 3-hour hike, we cross our last pass located at 5,000 meters (16,404 feet) then we hike downhill to a flat area from where we will enjoy the beautiful views of the Rainbow Mountain, then we hike for about 3 hours to Pitumarca community where we board our bus back to Cusco.

Day 13: Flight Cusco – Lima (B)

After breakfast, you will be picked up from your hotel and driven to Cusco airport to board your flight to Lima.
