Our trip offers a variety of activities to give you the opportunity to experience some of Alaska’s best adventures. You will explore the Matanuska Glacier- Thousands of years old, massive glacier which is tucked up into the head of the Matanuska Valley ;visit a  local farm in the Matanuska Valley; enjoy a scenic ride to Takeetna and experience an exhilarating fly and hike . Your journey continues with a local train ride to Denali where you will embark on half day hiking in Denali witnessing the amazing view of the Alaskan range and enjoy a thrilling canyon rafting trip. You will also experience Denali National park tour and travel to Chena hot springs for unforgettable aurora viewing adventure.

ITINERARY

Day 01: Welcome to Anchorage ( D)

Today is your arrival day (arrival before 4 pm)

Meet your local guide at 5pm in downtown Anchorage for our private dinner and meet & greet. We will go over the itinerary, answer any last minute questions and enjoy a Welcome to Alaska presentation.

Overnight Anchorage – Standard Room with private bath

Day 02: Matanuska Glacier ( B, L , D)

Today is our first full day tour to the Matanuska Glacier. We will enjoy a locally made lunch and 3 hours at the Matanuska Glacier for our exploration of the ancient blue ice. The day concludes with a group dinner and evening presentation on geology overview of Alaska.

Day 03: Local farm visit in the Matanuska Valley-Talkeetna ( B , L, D)

Following check out, we travel north to the 1930s colony community of Palmer for a Farmto Lunch Tour at a local farm in the Matanuska Valley. Following our tour in Palmer, travel north to the quaint town of Talkeetna. The supply & aviation base for Denali expeditions, this town is full of colorful characters that make this a must visit during your stay in Alaska. This evening provides a group dinner and evening presentation on the aurora borealis. An optional evening walk to view the Alaska Night Sky is offered by your local Alaskan guide. Your room is an authentic roadhouse accommodations, simple and cozy with a shared bath across the hall.

Day 04: Fly and Hike ( B, L, D)

Take flight today with a local aviation office to experience Denali by air. The Alaska bush plane pilot will use a float plane to take off on a local lake and land in a glacier-made lake in the Alaska Range for your guided hike. This evening’s dinner includes a presentation on early aviation pioneers in Talkeetna.

Day 05: Train Talkeetna – Denali

Enjoy family style breakfast at the Talkeetna Roadhouse to sample the best of the best! Featured both on the travel channel and food network, the Talkeetna Roadhouse is a great way to start the adventures north to Denali. Travel GoldStar Service in the dome car seats, lunch in Gold Star Dining Car and the open air viewing platform access. This evening the group dinner is held in Raven Hall with a Welcome to the Subarctic evening presentation. Overnight in cabins with private bath along the riverfront.

Day 06:Hiking and Rafting ( B, L, D)

We will begin our hike as the trail climbs steeply and crosses the Alaska Railroad tracks. Then, the trail moderates and emerges from the forest to a grand view of the Nenana River and the Alaska Range looking south toward Windy Pass. From there the trail loops around the ridge and follows a series of three scenic lakes. Eventually, the park plans to build a trail all the way back north, another 7 miles, to the park entrance area. This is a forested walk, although you can divert up the hillside, which is normally covered with wildflowers. This can be a great hike for a picnic with a view. It can also be very wet and muddy, so be sure to wear rubber boots or hiking boots. We will pack a picnic lunch and enjoy the day in Denali! This evening enjoy a presentation on Life in Denali led by a local Alaskan.

This afternoon is a Canyon Rafting Trip. This river trip begins at the entrance to Denali National Park and journeys 11 river miles to Healy, Alaska. During this 2 Hour whitewater adventure expect to encounter over 10 major Class III to IV rapids in the Nenana River Canyon! The Denali National Park frontier will be the setting on your river left shore with Mt. Healy rising over 3,000 feet to th summit. Exciting wave-trains and powerful hydraulics will create rapids like “Razorback,” “Iceworm,” “Cable Car,” “Royal Flush,” and “Coffee Grinder!” No experience is required; ages 10 and up are welcome. Choose an Oar Raft and hold on or a Paddle Raft (minimum age is 14) for extra hands-on excitement.

Day 7: Denali National Park tour ( B, L, D)

After a hearty breakfast, we’ll grab our daypacks and again head out in search of adventure in Denali. This full day hike will include lunch in the field and a visit to the Eielson Visitors Center. The first visitor’s center was a tent camp called Camp Eielson and named after an early Alaskan aviator pioneer, Carl Ben Eielson. This location has always been famous for its amazing views of Denali on clear days. It is also not uncommon to see wildlife on the surrounding hillsides. The tour leader will introduce you to Denali National Park and Preserve in this full day tour with hike. There is a bus ride in order to get to Eielson Visitors Center. Guests should plan on being outdoors all day and prepare accordingly. Trails from the Eielson Visitors Center are generally considered easy to moderate in difficulty. A suggested packing list will be provided upon booking. Return times vary based on wildlife viewing opportunities. Dinner tonight with another educational presentation at Riverside Hall on campus.

Day 8: Scenic Drive to Fairbanks and Chena Hot Springs Aurora Tour ( B, L, D)

Another breakfast at campus before departure. Your guide will transport you and your luggage to Fairbanks. This evening we travel to Chena Hot Springs for an aurora viewing adventure at the aurorium and dinner at the restaurant on site. Also included is the ice museum tickets to see the ice sculptures at the year round ice structure. Overnight tonight in downtown Fairbanks at the SpringHill Suites by Marriott.

Day 9: Fairbanks City Tour with Morris Thompson Cultural Center & Alyeska Pipeline Viewing Evening Aurora Dinner Tour ( B, D)

Enjoy your visit to the Morris Thompson Cultural Center on our brief Fairbanks City Tour. We will have time to walk through the museum-like exhibits at the visitor’s center before our visit to the Alyeska Pipeline Viewing Platform in Fox, Alaska. We will enjoy dinner together before an evening aurora tour outside the Fairbanks City Lights. Have your cameras ready to capture the aurora!
